Bence Stipsicz and Vilmos Gallo each scored for the Hungary, before Istvan Bartalis dropped his overtime goal to seal France’s fate.
The Frenchman got in front with a power-play goal from Charles Bertrand. Hungary quickly equalized, before France once again edged in front with Tim Bozon.
However, a costly error in defense was sufficient for Hungary to drew the game level once again at 2-2.
After a goalless third period, Bartalis goal clinched the victory for Hungary, their first of the tournament and only second in top division of the World Championship since 1930s.
Hungary face Sweden, while France go against the host Finland in a group full of uncertainties.
