The 26-year-old had his best-ever Australian Open run in 2022 as he reached the semifinals

Italian Matteo Berrettini is confident that he is in the group of top Australian Open favorites as he admits his big goal for the 2023 season is to finally become a Grand Slam champion and to also return to the top-10 in the world ranking.

“I consider myself as one of them [top players],” the world No 16 told Eurosport.

“I remember playing Alcaraz at the beginning of the year and I felt that he is a great player and he had great potential. I didn’t expect him to go up that fast but he deserved it so good for him. At the same time, Novak and Rafa are always Novak and Rafa.

“They’re always going to be there. Age-wise I’m in the middle of them, but I feel that I can get back to that level, and obviously the goal is to get back in the top 10 and see from there. Last year, before the hand surgery I was at my best ranking.

“I was six in the world. I know that it is my level and I know I can get back there. Why not even better?”.

Earlier this year, the 26-year-old Berrettini had his best-ever Australian Open run as he made the semifinal before losing to Rafael Nadal in four sets.

Berrettini had a bad luck at Grand Slams this year. After undergoing a hand surgery, he was forced to miss the French Open.
