The Mexican has been investigated for over six years and his visa overstaying led to his sending back to his home country

Former boxing world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has been deported to Mexico, where he faces serious allegations of cartel ties.

The 39-year-old fighter was arrested in the United States for overstaying his visa and lying on a green card application, before being handed over to Mexican authorities.

Chavez was transferred to a prison near Hermosillo, in the northern state of Sonora, according to an official who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum later confirmed the news during her daily press conference.

“I understand he was deported. I don’t know if it was yesterday or this morning, but we were informed that he was arriving in Mexico,” Sheinbaum told reporters.

Chavez is wanted in Mexico on charges of alleged arms and drug trafficking, as well as links to the Sinaloa cartel. Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero revealed that the investigation into Chavez dates back to 2019.
