Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has expressed his praise for the Real Madrid supporters after the club decided to play the famous “You will never walk alone” anthem as a sign of gratitude for the Merseyside team, who payed tribute at Anfield to Amancio Amaro, Real’s honorary president, who passed away shortly before the first leg.
Los Blancos usually have a tradition of playing their anthem “Hala Madrid” after each win, but on this occasion it was the Liverpool anthem that was voiced throughout the stadium as both sets of fans waved their scarves as a sign of respect.
Klopp said in a post-match Interview that he is grateful for the gesture, which shows how much the two clubs respect each other.
“People told me, my staff told me after the game. It is a really Nice gesture.” said the German coach
“We are two heavyweights who meet each other quite frequently in International football. I think it is clear we respect each other a lot.”
Liverpool’s dreams of a historic comeback were short-lived as the 14-time Champions League winners calmly progressed to the quarter-finals with a 1-0 win at home and 6-2 on aggregate.
