Alex Wenberg had a goal and an assist, as Eeli Tolvanen and Morgan Geekie also added their name on the scoresheets.
Goaltender Phillip Grubauer made 34 saves against his former to help his current team sink the defending Stanley Cup champions.
Miko Rantanen scored the sole goal for the Avalanche, whose 10-game winning streak in the first round came to an abrupt end.
Goaltender Alexander Georgiev stopped 40 shots.
“Our whole team just wasn’t quite good enough,” Avalanche coach Jared Bednar commented. “I thought we did some good things. They obviously did more good things.”
The Colorado team will certainly look to make up for their shocking defeat and pounce back in game 2, which will be held in Denver.
