Czech Republic Barbora Krejcikova completed a dream week at WTA Dubai on Saturday night, defeating world number one Iga Swiatek, 6-4, 6-2 in 91 minutes to capture her first WTA title of the year, and the sixth of her career.
The 2021 Roland Garros winner is also the first player to beat Swiatek twice since she rose to No. 1 on the WTA rankings last April, having also beaten the Polish trailblazer in the final of Ostrava last October, 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-3.
The 27-year-old Krejcikova became just the fifth woman in WTA rankings history to beat No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 at the same event – she defeated No. 2-ranked Aryna Sabalenka and No. 3-ranked Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals and semifinals.
Today’s win marked Krejcikova’s fourth win over a Top 10 player this week. That feat began in the second round, where the Czech had to save four match points against World No.8 Daria Kasatkina of Russia.
Following her latest exploits, Krejcikova is projected to ascend from World No.30 to World No.16 in Monday’s updated singles rankings.
