In a move that has thrilled basketball fans across the city, Kyle Lowry has officially become a member of the Philadelphia 76ers, marking his return to his hometown team. The announcement, made official on Tuesday night, concludes the highly anticipated move of the six-time All-Star guard to the Sixers following a contract buyout with the Charlotte Hornets.
Lowry, who is set to turn 38 next month, finalized his exit from the Hornets over the weekend, setting the stage for his arrival in Philadelphia, a development initially reported on Saturday. While the financial terms of Lowry’s contract with the 76ers have not been publicly disclosed, ESPN has reported that he will sign a deal worth $2.8 million for the remainder of the season.
A Philadelphia native, Lowry’s basketball journey began in the city where he played high school basketball before making a name for himself at Villanova. His move to the 76ers also reunites him with coach Nick Nurse, under whom Lowry played during their successful tenure with the Toronto Raptors.
Prior to joining the 76ers, Lowry started the season with the Miami Heat, playing 37 games (35 starts) and averaging 8.2 points, 4.0 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.1 steals. His transition to the Hornets came last month in a trade involving Terry Rozier, with an agreement that Lowry would not play until after the recent trade deadline.
While it remains uncertain when Lowry will make his debut for Philadelphia, the 76ers are set to host the Miami Heat on Wednesday, in what could be a poignant moment if Lowry is able to take to the court before the All-Star break. The team has also announced that Lowry will don his familiar No. 7 jersey, a decision that has led Mo Bamba to switch his jersey to No. 5.
Throughout his 18-season career, spanning stints with the Memphis Grizzlies, Houston Rockets, Toronto Raptors, and Miami Heat, Lowry has appeared in 1,115 games (866 starts), boasting career averages of 14.4 points, 6.2 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game.
