Luka Doncic is staying in Los Angeles and aiming for history. The Slovenian superstar has signed a new three-year, $165 million contract extension with the Lakers, solidifying his role as the face of the franchise.
By opting out in 2027, Doncic would become eligible for a four-year, $323 million extension. However, if he waits until 2028—his 10th year in the NBA—he could negotiate a five-year deal worth a staggering $418 million.

That contract could make him the first player in league history to earn $80 million per season, translating to nearly $1 million per game. In the final year alone, Doncic could take home $95 million.
Speaking at the press conference following the announcement, Doncic made it clear that his ambitions go far beyond numbers.
“We have everything we need to compete for the championship title,” he said. “We all have to improve our game. It’s going to be a long summer, but I can’t wait to get back here for the preseason.”

Doncic’s commitment comes at a pivotal time for the Lakers, who have made several moves to bolster their roster. The franchise added Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart during the offseason, along with Jake LaRavia and Adu Tierro through the NBA Draft. According to U.S. media reports, Doncic played a key role in recruiting both Ayton and Smart to join him in Los Angeles.
Several teammates were present at the contract signing event, including Ayton, Smart, Tierro, Rui Hachimura, Gabe Vincent, Jackson Hayes, Maxi Kleber, and Jared Vanderbilt. Afterward, Doncic was surprised by the group before flying to Las Vegas to attend a Backstreet Boys concert – his favorite band.
