Roberto (48) head-butted Verona forward Thomas Henry in the aftermath of their 1-0 home loss yesterday. The team announced later on Sunday that they condemn the incident and have now fired the head coach.
“After the episodes that took place at the end of the Lecce – Verona game, U.S. Lecce shares that it has dismissed manager Roberto D’Aversa of his duties,” Lecce shared with the media today.
The manager was shown the red card along with Thomas. After that, the head coach, who joined the Serie A side in June 2023, apologized while claiming his footballers had been continually provoked towards the end of the match.
Lecce have triumphed in 5 of their last 28 Serie A matches. They are 15th in the league with 25 points, 1 point above the relegation zone.
