Argentina’s leader, Leo Messi, was left disappointed after the cancellation of the Finalissima, regarding the game as a very important chance.
The Argentinian captain looked to approach the final seriously ahead of the World Cup and was not part of the talks that led to the cancellation.
The clash between Argentina, who triumphed with the Copa America 2 years ago, and Spain, who won the European championship the same year, was scheduled to happen in Qatar later this month, but it will not happen after the war in the region.
“After many talks between UEFA and the organization authorities in the Middle East country, it was decided today that, because of the war in the region, it is for the best that the match not be played in Qatar,” UEFA shared today. “We tried to change the location of the final, but Argentina denied the offered solutions.”
CONMEBOL also wrote that Argentina agreed to a change of venue for the final but demanded that the match be held 4 days later than originally scheduled. UEFA answered that this was not possible, and that led to the cancellation.
