The Sky Blues surprised the home side after Kevin De Bruyne found the Reds players unprepared after he took a corner swiftly to John Stones as the defender scored from close range near the right post to give Guardiola’s side the lead at Anfield in the 23rd minute.
Dominik Szoboszlai had a fantastic opportunity to tie the clash in the 32nd minute, but his header from near the penalty went wide of the right post, and the 1st half ended with Man. City’s 1-goal lead.

At the beginning of the 2nd half, Ake made a huge mistake that made Ederson foul Nunez, and the Reds received a penalty. Alexis Mac Allister converted it in the 50th minute to tie the match 1-1 as Ederson injured himself in the episode that led to the penalty and was replaced by Stefan Ortega a few minutes later.
After that, Luis Diaz hade 2 fantastic chances to score but the Colombian forward missed them both and the result remain 1-1. Darwin Nunez had a fantastic opportunity to give Liverpool the lead in the 71st minute but Ortega saved it.
Phil Foden’s rebound in the 74th minute hit the crossbar, and Manchester City also failed to take the lead.
At the end of the regular time, substitute Jeremy Doku shot from inside the box, but he missed as the ball ended in the right post.

In the last minute of the extra time, Doku struck Alexis Mac Allister inside the Sky Blues penalty area but Michael Oliver didn’t give the Reds a penalty and the match finished without a winner.
