Luiz Diaz was infamously denied an opening goal in a heated 2-1 loss against Tottenham Hotspur, despite footages clearly showing Colombian being in an onside position.

The decision has caused major uproar in the footballing world and the match referees have been severely criticized.
However, it has now been revealed what really happened as VAR referee Darren England has spoken out. According to him, the assistant referees thought the goal had been given and after a video check told match official Simon Hooper to stick to his decision.
Many were left baffled after the quick check, but that is because England thought that Diaz was clearly onside, thinking that Hooper’s on-field decision had been a goal.
Tottenham then took a free-kick for offside, which at that point – when the error would have been noticed – it is said to be too late to pull play back.
