He will start his 18th NFL campaign in September, which would break a tie with Jason Witten and Tony Gonzalez for the most ever appeared as tight end. Mercedes has competed in 251 matches in his NFL career, which ranks 5th among active players.
Lewis (39) caught only 6 passes for 66 yards and 2 TDs for Green Bay Packers in the past season, but he contributed a lot to the franchise as a blocker.
NY Jets QB Aaron Rodgers even praised the tight end during the off-season and shared that he would be honored to play with him and finish his career as his teammate.
Mercedes will compete with Cole Kmet and Robert Tonyan, another former Green Bay player, for the tight end position in the Bears.
Jacksonville Jaguars picked him at the 2006 NFL Draft, and he spent 12 years with them. Lewis was part of the Pro Bowl in 2010.
