Argentina defeated reigning champions Brazil 1-0 to advance to the Olympic Games in Paris.
“It’s not secreted my relationship with Lionel Messi, my friendship,” Mascherano shared.
“A footballer like him has the doors open to join us [at the Olympics], then it will obviously depend on Leo and his schedule.”
Leo, who led Argentina to their 3rd World Cup trophy in Qatar in 2022, celebrated his nation’s qualifying for the Olympics by posting on social media a photograph of Mascherano’s squad after the weekend’s triumph with the word: “VAMOS!!!”
Argentina U23 player Thiago Almada claimed playing with Messi at the upcoming Olympics would be a dream.
“I hope Leo wants to join us in Paris,” Atlanta United’s midfielder claimed.
Leo won the gold medal with Argentina at the Olympics in Beijing in 2008.
