Los Blancos trailed the Catalans by 11 points with 8 games to spare and had a glimmer of a hope after a couple of sloppy results from the league leaders, but after today’s shocker of a game it’s fair to say it is all curtains for the title race in La Liga.
Real were without injured Karim Benzema and that could be felt as the 34-time Spain champions struggled in attack and found themselves trailing by two goals in the 24th minute.
Vinicious pulled one back at the half-hour mark, but it would turn out to be a mere consolation as Girona run riot in the second half and deservedly increased its advantage to 4-1.
It’s certainly a game that Taty Castellanos will remember for the rest of his life as all of Girona’s goals were his as he became the first player to put 4 past Real Madrid this century in La Liga and the first overall since Lewandowski memorable 4 in the first tie of the 2013 Champions League 1/2 finals.
Carlo Ancelotti will now set their sights firmly on the Champions League, where the face Manchester City in a crunch 1/2 final match.
