The home side started the match strong as they were rewarded a penalty inside two minutes when Nathan-Dylan Saliba shot was deflected by the arm of Union defender Jakob Glesnes.
Up stepped Romell Quito and his shot nestled in to the top left-hand corner past goalkeeper Joseph Bendik for 1-0.
The Philadelphia side, however, stood up to the challange and made a swift comeback with Mikael Uhre’s brace securing them a 2-1 lead in the second half.
Their joy was soon dashed, when forward Julian Carranza received a second booking in the 69th minute and was subsequently sent off.
With 10-men on the field the Philadelphia team found themselves under the avalanche of Montreal’s attacks. But despite their efforts the Montreal team could not convert any of their chances and it looked like the game was heading Union’s way.
But in the 90th minute the controversial moment occured when Chinonso Offor headed home a rebound and Montreal tied the score at 2-2. At first the goal was called off after being reviewed for an offside. However, upon second review it was seen that defender Kai Wagner, who was off the screen at the initial review, was situated near the goal line, which played Offor onside. So the goal stood.
Despite the confusion and the anger in Union’s player, the Montreal team refused to put on the brakes and 8 minutes into stoppage time Quite slotted home his second goal of the match and gave his team a memorable victory.
“The most beautiful thing tonight was when we scored the 2-2, we went for the win,” head-coach Losada said after the game.
“We really kept on pushing and we felt here we can take more than one point. That’s a mentality. That’s football. That’s also the least we can do for so many fans that were tonight present.”
