A day after Nadal, a 14-time French Open champion, suffered a heavy singles defeat to Novak Djokovic, the 38-year-old bounced back impressively. Teaming up with his compatriot Alcaraz, they put on a commanding display, delighting a packed and vociferous crowd on a sweltering Court Suzanne Lenglen arena.
Nicknamed ‘Nadalcraz,’ the Spanish pair combined their formidable firepower to keep their gold medal dreams alive. Alcaraz, 21, smashed a forehand winner to secure a crucial break of serve in the first set, with Nadal roaring in approval.
Koolhof, a former doubles world number one, and Griekspoor provided stiff resistance in the second set, dominating a second-set tiebreak and winning it 7-2. However, Nadalcraz ignited in the deciding third set, fist-pumping and roaring after a succession of electrifying winners, blazing to victory and securing their place in the quarter-finals.
