Napoli’s striker, Victor Osimhen, may miss the upcoming Champions League last-16 clash against Barcelona due to fatigue, as he was absent from their recent 1-1 draw against Genoa in Serie A. Osimhen returned to Napoli following Nigeria’s participation in the Africa Cup of Nations, where they reached the final but lost 2-1 to Ivory Coast on Sunday.
Coach Walter Mazzarri expressed concerns about Osimhen’s fatigue level, stating, “According to him and the doctors, the boy is at his lowest.” Given the circumstances, Mazzarri opted not to risk Osimhen in the Genoa match, emphasizing the need to prioritize the player’s recovery after his recent intense tournament experience.
The Africa Cup of Nations took a toll on Osimhen, who experienced stomach pains leading up to the semi-final against South Africa. Despite these challenges, he played a crucial role in Nigeria’s journey to the final, scoring one goal in the tournament.
Mazzarri shared insights into Osimhen’s recovery plan, mentioning, “Today he had an anti-fatigue training, tomorrow he will train. We hope to have him ready for Barcelona (but) his presence will not be certain.” The coach acknowledged the ongoing challenges with Osimhen, mentioning previous injuries and the recent Africa Cup of Nations as factors impacting the player’s availability.
As Napoli prepares for the crucial Champions League encounter, uncertainty looms over Osimhen’s participation, and the team is closely monitoring his condition to determine his readiness for the upcoming match against Barcelona.
