The new rule will help relegated teams deal with financial problems after being dropped down to Serie B

Top-flight players in Italy will see their salaries slashed by 25% if their clubs are relegated to Serie B, following an agreement between Serie A and the Italian Footballers’ Association (AIC).

The five-year deal, announced on Tuesday, is set to take effect from September 2, 2025—after the close of next summer’s transfer window.

The new collective bargaining agreement is designed to ease the financial burden on clubs dropping out of the top division by automatically reducing player wages in the event of relegation. The clause will apply to all contracts signed after the implementation date, unless a separate stipulation is negotiated between the club and the player.

However, the agreement offers a safety net. If a relegated team earns promotion back to Serie A, affected player salaries will automatically revert to their original value.

In addition to the wage reduction clause, the agreement introduces a structured minimum salary based on a player’s age—a baseline that cannot be lowered, even if a club is relegated. Existing contracts will remain untouched, and players currently under contract will continue under the terms already agreed.
