A 27-year-old man opened fire inside a Manhattan skyscraper on Monday evening, killing four people and injuring others, before turning the gun on himself in a shocking act of violence that has shaken New York City.
The gunman, identified as Shane Tamura from Las Vegas, reportedly left behind a note blaming the National Football League (NFL) and a degenerative brain condition for his actions.
According to New York City Mayor Eric Adams, the note referenced chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disease associated with repeated head trauma, which Tamura claimed had affected his mental health.
Though Tamura never played professionally, former teammates confirmed that he played high school football in California.
New York City shooter Shane Tamura was once a high school football star, winning six awards and later playing in Canada.

The incident occurred at a high-rise building that houses the NFL’s headquarters, though Tamura is believed to have taken the wrong elevator and entered a different section of the building. Despite this, one NFL employee was seriously injured in the shooting, as confirmed by league commissioner Roger Goodell in a message to staff.
Among the victims was 36-year-old police officer Didarul Islam, who was working as a security guard at the site. Finance giant Blackstone also confirmed the death of one of their employees, Wesley LePatner. Two other civilians, both male, were also killed in the attack.
