“Very proud of this group,” St. Louis head coach Bradley Carnell said. “To come here and leave with three points. I don’t think there’s many greater things.”
It was a stunning loss for Austin, which advanced to the Western Conference final before losing 3-0 to eventual champion LAFC in its second season of play last year.
Centre back Tim Parker wrote his name into St. Louis’ history books in by scoring the club’s opening goal in MLS – his third since 2018.
The veteran silenced the raucous Q2 Stadium crowd and gave the expansion side a surprise 1-0 lead in the 24th minute with a towering header off an Eduard Lowen corner kick.

“It’s an amazing feeling. I don’t score that many goals. So it’s kind of ironic that I scored tonight, in the way that I did,” Parker said.
“I’m just really, really, really happy. I think it’s a combination of all the hard work that we put in and I was just in the right place at the right time.”
Sebastián Driussi found the net in the 45th minute to get Austin on the scoreboard and Jon Gallagher gave the home team a 2-1 lead with a goal in the 72nd minute.
Jared Stroud scored in the 78th minute to pull St. Louis level at 2-2 before Klauss’ winner.
Both teams next play Saturday. St. Louis hosts Charlotte FC and Austin hosts CF Montreal.
