World number one Novak Djokovic announced on Saturday that he would not be participating in the Miami Open this year as he seeks to manage his tournament schedule.
Djokovic, 36, expressed his reasons, stating, “At this stage of my career, I’m balancing my private and professional schedule.”
Hi Miami!
Unfortunately I won’t be playing the @MiamiOpen this year. At this stage of my career, I’m balancing my private and professional schedule. I’m sorry that I won’t experience some of the best and most passionate fans in the world. I’m looking fw competing in MI in future!— Novak Djokovic (@DjokerNole) March 16, 2024
He expressed regret over missing out on the opportunity to engage with the passionate fans, acknowledging Miami’s reputation for having some of the best supporters in the world.
Djokovic has a remarkable record at the Miami Open, having clinched the title six times, with his most recent victory in 2016. However, his unexpected early exit in the third round at Indian Wells, where he was defeated by 123rd-ranked Italian Luka Nardi, has prompted him to reassess his tournament commitments.
Despite skipping Miami, Djokovic remains focused on securing success during the ATP Tour’s upcoming claycourt swing. His decision to forego the Miami Open reflects his strategic approach to prioritize certain events while aiming to capture his first title of the year.
The Miami Open main draw is scheduled to commence on Wednesday, attracting tennis enthusiasts eager to witness top-tier competition, albeit without Djokovic’s presence.
