The legendary captain of the Washington Capitals Alexander Ovechkin has dismissed comparisons between his hockey accomplishments and those of basketball icon Michael Jordan. Speaking to matchtv.ru, Ovechkin emphasized the vast difference in stature and legacy between the two athletes:
“If you compare me with Michael Jordan, then this is Heaven and Earth. Jordan is the greatest — the same as my mother, Tatyana Ovechkina, in basketball, a two-time Olympic champion and multiple-time European champion.”

Ovechkin, now 39, has had a monumental career in the NHL since debuting in 2005. Earlier this year, he etched his name deeper into hockey history by breaking Wayne Gretzky’s long-standing record for most goals in NHL regular season history, reaching 897 goals. Over two decades, he has become a symbol of consistency, power, and goal-scoring brilliance.
His biggest achievement came in 2018, when he led the Capitals to their first Stanley Cup, a long-awaited triumph. Internationally, he has also tasted glory, winning three World Championship gold medals with Russia.
Interestingly, both Ovechkin and Jordan share a Washington connection — Ovechkin with the Capitals, and Jordan with the Wizards during his final NBA seasons.
