The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced that two-time All-Star goaltender Tristan Jarry will be placed on waivers. The move comes as Jarry, 29, continues to struggle this season with an 8-7-4 record, a 3.32 goals-against average, and an .886 save percentage. These numbers are a significant drop from his past performances, particularly during his All-Star campaigns in 2020 and 2022.

Jarry’s challenges have been most evident in his early-game performances. This season, he has allowed a goal on the opponent’s first shot six times and conceded a shorthanded goal on Seattle’s second shot during a 4-2 loss to the Kraken on Tuesday.
The decision to waive Jarry comes just 18 months after the Penguins signed him to a five-year, $5.375 million AAV contract. Despite reclaiming the starting role this season after losing it to Alex Nedeljkovic last spring, Jarry’s inconsistency has hindered his ability to solidify his position as the team’s top goaltender.
With the Penguins preparing for a seven-game road trip while sitting on the fringes of the playoff race in the Eastern Conference, the move suggests the team is exploring options to shake up their roster. If unclaimed, Jarry could be reassigned to the AHL, providing the Penguins with salary cap flexibility and an opportunity for him to regain his form.
