Sergio Perez was left to rue his lack of pace in Canada, which saw him finish a distant 6th, some way behind his teammate, race winner Max Verstappen.
Despite starting 12th, Perez left the track with bitterness as he had clean air for more than half of the race and not once he was able to demonstrate the pace, shown by Verstappen at the front.
“Today was a bit of a surprise, we just didn’t have the pace. It was looking good on the hard tire initially but once the Safety Car came in, I couldn’t recover the grip on that tire and we didn’t have the pace on the medium,” he said.
“It is important we take time to understand the weekend because this race, in particular, has been poor in pace and we need to get on top of it. I have the confidence in myself and know what I can do but today we were not good.”
The results is yet another blow to Perez’ title aspiration as the Mexican now trails a massive 69 points to Verstappen, who is convincingly running away with the title.
