Nickel CB Jalen Pitre and the Houston Texans have agreed to a 3-campaign, 39-million-dollar deal extension with 30 million dollars guaranteed.
The 3rd-year safety out of Baylor finished the past campaign with 65 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, and 8 pass deflections. Key moment in the 2024 season for him was in Houston’s 34-10 victory against the Cowboys in Week 11, when he forced a fumble on Dallas RT Tyler Guyton. That led to DE Derek Barnett scooping and scoring for a TD in the 4th quarter after Barnett had strip-sacked Dallas QB Cooper Rush.

However, Jalen injured himself the next week in his team’s 32-27 defeat against the Titans. At the time of his shoulder problem, the safety ranked 3rd on the Texans in tackles, evened for 5th in tackles for loss, and 3rd in pass deflections.
This is the 3rd defensive footballer during the offseason to ink an extension with the Houston after CB Derek Stingley and Danielle Hunter agreed to huge deals. Head coach DeMeco Ryans revealed that the team wanted to send a “message” with these contracts.
Jalen Pitre is objectively a weird case of figuring out how much he is worth but I think the Texans did well here.
Pitre’s value cannot be understated by just calling him a “nickel”, he is one of the most impactful defenders on this team.
