Dustin Poirier didn’t get the opportunity to finish his story at the UFC 302 when he fell short vs. Islam Makhachev for the UFC lightweight title.
After the defeat, Dustin revealed he had been mulling the possibility of retirement. However, the only way to do that was with the championship belt.
“I was going to put the belt down with the gloves,” the fighter claimed during an interview. “But this is my story, and everything happened for a reason. It’s nothing that I can do.”
When speaking with the media ahead of UFC 302 in the past month, Dustin teased the idea of that being his last fight if he defeated Islam.
“That is possible,” Poirier shared.
Turns out, that was his plan all along. However, Dustin suffered a defeat in the 5th round after the Russian fighter submitted him and now he is yet to make his final decision if he wants to continue to fight or not.
"I want to give more because I know I have a short window to give the best of myself, but also, I've given so much of myself to the sport for so long."
Dustin Poirier talks about what he weighs when deciding whether to retire or not.
