The former Indy 500 winner has passed away

Gil de Ferran, a winner of Indianapolis 500 and former Sporting Director for McLaren and Honda at Formua 1, has passed away at the age of 56.

The French-born Brazilian made a name for himself back in the early 90s, when he won the British Formula 3 championship and finishing third in the International Formula 3000.

Instead of making the big step into Formula 1, De Ferran opted to board to America – a decision, that would bring him two Champ Car titles and victory at Indy 500 in 2003.

After retirement De Ferran got into a managerial role as a Sporting Director of BAR-Honda in the mid-2000s and then at McLaren between 2018 and 2021.

“I am very shocked and deeply saddened by the news that we have lost Gil de Ferran,” said Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali
