The Briton had been absent for 8 months after undergoing a surgery on both her hands and she battled hard for her return.
It was a hard-fought game as Raducanu made a swift start, claiming the first set 6-3. The world number 134 Ruse, however, fought back to claim the second 4-6.
In the final set Raducanu led 5-2, but failed to convert two of his serving games. But the 21-year-old broke again for a 6-5 lead and eventually closed out the match on her fourth match point.
A much tougher opposition awaits Raducanu in the next round, where she faces second seed Elina Svitolina.
“It’s difficult after having such a long hiatus, but I’m grateful to be healthy, grateful to be able to move my body, not bed-ridden and in a wheelchair,” Raducanu said.
“I can’t wait to be out here, start this season and be happy and healthy.”
