The postseason landscape could change dramatically as the Boston Red Sox traded slugger Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday, sending shockwaves across MLB.
In exchange, the Red Sox received a substantial package: right-handers Jordan Hicks and Jose Bello, left-hander Kyle Harrison, and outfield prospect James Tibbs III. The trade ends Devers’ tenure in Boston just a year and a half after he signed a 10-year, $313.5 million extension.

The 28-year-old designated hitter, a three-time All-Star, had grown frustrated after being removed from his longtime role at third base. Despite the positional shift, he continued to deliver at the plate, hitting .272 with 15 home runs and 58 RBIs in 73 games this season. He wrapped up his Red Sox stint with a solo homer in Sunday’s 2-0 win over the Yankees, completing a sweep in the Bronx.
Meanwhile, the Giants, who sit just two games behind Dodgers, are making a strong push. Lefty Kyle Harrison was set to start Sunday night’s game against Los Angeles but was pulled from warmups after learning of the trade. Sean Hjelle stepped in as a late substitute in San Francisco’s 5-4 loss.

Giants manager Bob Melvin praised the move: “To get a guy like Devers … there’s a lot you have to give up for him, but this fits us perfectly. It’s a power left-handed bat, a guy that can go the other way and hit for power in our ballpark. I mean, it’s tailor-made for us.”
