Kike Hernandez proved to be the hero for Boston as he hit a tiebreaking single in the 10th inning, taking advantage of Gleyber Torres’ costly error.
Justin Turner homered and Brayan Bello fired seven efficient innings for the Red Sox, matching his career high.
“Hopefully we can build off of this,” manager Alex Cora said. “If we keep doing this from the mound, then, we know we’re going to hit. That’s just a matter of time.”
The Yankees could manage only 3 hits throughout the whole game. Jose Trevino had an early two-hit single that took a lucky bounce off.
Clarke Schmidt threw 5 1/3 effective innings, retiring his final eight batters, and New York carried a 2-1 lead into the eighth.
But then came the costly error from Torres, which saw Hernandez led off with a single against Michael King and shortly after got a second.
