A lap time of 1:21:355 was enough too see the Spaniard lead the field, juts 0.019 seconds ahead of second-placed Lando Norris.
Sergio Perez rounded off the top 3 with a lap time of 1:21:540, but the Mexican will plenty of worries on his hand after crashing out in the late stages of the session.
Oscar Piastri finished fourth, underlining McLaren’s strong pace, ahead of reigning champion Max Verstappen, who is red-hot favorite to clinch his 10th consecutive victory.
The other Ferrari of Charles Leclerc slotted in 6th.
