Jannick Sinner got his second consecutive three-set win to book a place in the quarter-finals of this year’s ATP 500 in Halle.
He managed to edge over his fellow Italian – Lorenzo Sonego, with 6:7 (4), 6:4, 6:4. The world No. 9 lost the opening leg in dramatic fashion but still broke into the top eight after doing the same a week ago in Hertogenbosch.
In the first set, both missed several chances to break, and in the end it came to a tiebreak where Sonego showed more composure and ended the set with a run of three straight points, winning 7:6 (4).

The world No. 39 could have taken a huge step towards victory in the start of the second set but at 1-0, he squandered two break opportunities. Those missed chances cost him dearly, as Sinner broke shortly after to make it 4-2. Although he missed three consecutive set points in the ninth game, the fourth seeded kept his composure and finished the set with a service game at zero for 6:4.
The final part unfolded in a similar fashion – Sonego again missed a break point in the second game, with the first break again going for Sinner and he made it 5-3 in his favor before closing the match in just under 3 hours of play.
In a battle to qualify for the semi-finals in Halle, he will face Jan-Lennard Struff or Alexander Bublik.
