Despite a determined second-half effort, Greece fell short against Spain in a Group A clash at the 2024 Paris Olympics, losing 84-77. Giannis Antetokounmpo, leading the charge for Greece, missed a crucial game-tying 3-pointer with 23 seconds left.
Greece was down by 14 points at halftime but managed to cut the deficit to six by the end of the third quarter. They even tied the game in the early minutes of the fourth quarter. However, Spain regained control and secured their first victory at the Olympics.
Antetokounmpo finished with an impressive 27 points, 11 rebounds, and three assists. Spain’s Santi Aldama led his team with 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Rudy Fernandez contributed 10 points before being helped off the court in the fourth quarter and not returning.

With losses to both Canada and Spain, Greece faces the risk of missing the knockout round. To automatically advance, they would need to finish in the top two of their group, which now seems unlikely. However, the two best third-place teams across all groups also advance based on point differential. Greece’s current scoring margin of minus-14 will be crucial in determining their fate.
Greece’s final group stage game is against Australia on Thursday. Australia, who defeated Spain by 12 in their opening game, is set to play Canada later on Tuesday.
