Goaltender Mads Sogaard was the only option for Senators’ coach D.J. Smith

German forward Tim Stutzle scored a spectacular goal 1:55 into overtime to fuel the Ottawa Senators to a 4-3 victory over the Calgary Flames in front of 15,024 at the Canadian Tire Centre on Monday night.

Third-period goals by Alex DeBrincat and Drake Batherson erased a two-goal deficit in the final three minutes while captain Brady Tkachuk also chipped in with a goal.

It was the 25th time in 52 games the Senators have opened the scoring.

The goals by DeBrincat and Batherson came only 46 seconds apart in the third period and sent this one to overtime. DeBrincat’s came with goaltender Mads Sogaard out for an extra attacker at 18:32 of the third.

Dillon Dube scored twice for the Flames and former 67’s winger Tyler Toffoli also scored for Calgary.

Sogaard was the only option for Senators’ coach D.J. Smith after Ottawa lost goaltender Anton Forsberg to two knee injuries in the club’s 6-3 loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday. They are also without veteran Cam Talbot for another seven-to-10 days with a groin injury.

Selected No. 37 overall by the Senators in the 2019 NHL draft, Sogaard looked poised and up for the challenge. He has spent three years with the club’s AHL affiliate in Belleville and has the maturity in his game to get this opportunity.

Making only his third NHL start, the Senators went into this game knowing they couldn’t put too much pressure on the 22-year-old.

Ottawa were coming off as 7-2 win Saturday in Buffalo and the Senators had to clean up their act defensively in front of Sogaard.

“He’s a laid back guy, but he’s competitive and he was really good in practice (Sunday),” Smith said Monday morning.

“This isn’t his first but there’s some shooters over there and they just scored seven goals so this isn’t like you’re being thrown in against a bottom team.

“This is a team full of guys that fill the net. He’s just got to do what he does well and don’t think anything past that. He doesn’t need to over prepare for this.”
