DC United have announced that they are keeping their captain Steven Birnbaum to a contract extension for two years, which will see the player stay at the club until 2025.
Birnbaum has spent almost a decade with DC United after being picked from the MLS SuperDraft back in 2014.
He has made 256 appearances across all competitions, which makes him third in DC’s all-time starters list behind Jaime Moreno with 386 and Bill Hamid with 297.
“Steven is in his 10th season with the team and continues to be one of the most consistent defenders in the league,” Dave Kasper, D.C. United president of soccer operations, said in a release.
“He is a leader in the locker room and in the DC community so we’re excited to extend his contract through 2025 and continue having him as a stalwart in our backline.”
Birnbaum has been instrumental in the team’s performances in the 2023 campaign as well, earning the praise of his manager Wayner Rooney.
