Ilia Topuria is the new UFC featherweight champion, putting an end to Alexander Volkanovski’s dominance in the category with a second-round knockout. The clash between the two headlined UFC 298, held in Anaheim, California, USA.
The Spaniard continues the tradition of no fighter over 35 years old winning a UFC title from lightweight and below. Despite Volkanovski claiming he is not too old for this, it marks his third loss, following two defeats against Islam Makhachev.
Topuria entered the fight exceptionally composed. Alexander blocked a high kick early in the first round. Volkanovski relied on low kicks, and Topuria pursued him. Ilya delivered heavy low kicks, but Volkanovski responded. Everything was settled in the second round.
Topuria pressed the champion against the cage with a powerful combination, ultimately finishing him with a right-handed strike. Volkanovski was knocked out, and we have a new champion. With this victory, Ilya extends his MMA streak to 14-0. On the other hand, Volkanovski now faces a series of two consecutive losses, both ending with a brutal knockout.
