For the 1st time since the 1980 Miracle on Ice, the USA secured an Olympic gold medal in men’s hockey as Jack Hughes notched the golden goal in 3-on-3 OT for a 2-1 victory vs. Canada today.
The U.S. players talked a big game before the Olympics as they labeled everything besides winning the gold medal as potential failure, and now they backed it up by winning the 1st place against their biggest rivals. The women’s hockey team also won the gold medals after a 2-1 triumph against Canada yesterday.
Jack’s goal, less than 120 seconds in the OT, was assisted by Zach Werenski, who wrestled the puck away from Canada’s Nathan MacKinnon and sent a cross-ice feed to find his teammate open.
“The most important thing is that we won the gold medal for the USA,” Jack claimed after the final. “I love my country and my teammates. It’s a phenomenal feeling. Our team is so strong.”
The USA goaltender Connor Hellebuyck was the star for the U.S. as he finished with 41 saves. The goalie had several big moments that led to the gold medal for the USA.
