Champions League will have a new format from 2024/25 season, butUEFA is already thinking about another change in the European tournaments, Marca reports. Together with the European Club Association (ECA), Nyon is working on a project that will come into effect from the 2027/28 season.
The idea is to have three tournaments – Champions League, Europa League and Aspiring League, which are connected to each other.
The plan is that each of the competitions will have 18 teams, which will be in a common group and each team will play twice against the others on the home-away basis. Thus, it is guaranteed 34 games. This is actually like a standard championship with 34 rounds, such as the Bundesliga in Germany.
The same applies to the Europa League and the Aspiring League.
The three tournaments will be connected, and the last two from the Champions League classification will be relegated to the Europa League, and the first two from the Europa League will enter in their place. From the Europa League, the last four will be relegated to the Aspiring League, which will be replaced by the first four in the tournament emerging as an alternative to the Conference League.
The idea in question will be discussed at the upcoming meetings of the UEFA Executive Committee. Opinions have already appeared on social networks that this is a version of the Super League, against which UEFA violently objected.
