France had to settle for second place in Group D at Euro 2024 despite Kylian Mbappe scoring his first goal at a European Championship in their 1-1 draw with Poland in Dortmund.
The two-time champions were poised to top the group when Mbappe, who was wearing a protective mask due to a broken nose, converted a penalty in the 56th minute after Jakub Kiwior fouled Ousmane Dembele.

However, Poland’s captain Robert Lewandowski equalized with his own penalty in the 79th minute. The penalty was awarded after VAR ruled that Dayot Upamecano had committed a clumsy foul on Karol Swiderski. Although France goalkeeper Mike Maignan initially saved Lewandowski’s shot, he was found to have come off his line too early.
Lewandowski made no mistake on his second attempt, rolling the ball in off the post to secure a point for his already eliminated side.

Austria topped the group following their 3-2 victory over the Netherlands in Berlin, with the Dutch progressing as one of the best third-placed teams. France’s second-place finish in the group means they will face a different path in the knockout stages as they look to advance further in the tournament.
