In a pivotal matchup, Gabe Vilardi’s performance propelled the Winnipeg Jets to a 5-2 victory over the Calgary Flames on Thursday night, securing a coveted playoff spot for the Jets while simultaneously dashing Calgary’s hopes for a wild-card berth. The win concluded a successful five-game homestand for the Jets.
Vilardi’s memorable night was highlighted by his hat trick, including his 19th goal of the season into an empty net with just over a minute remaining in the game. Adding to the Jets’ offensive prowess, Nikolaj Ehlers contributed with a goal and an assist, while Tyler Toffoli also found the back of the net. Connor Hellebuyck stood tall with 31 saves, ensuring the Jets improved their record to an impressive 46-24-6.
Calgary managed to find the back of the net twice, courtesy of goals from Martin Pospisil and MacKenzie Weegar, with goalie Dustin Wolf making 40 saves in a valiant effort.
Toffoli’s power-play goal late in the second period gave Winnipeg a crucial 3-2 lead, setting the stage for Vilardi’s second goal of the game, which extended the Jets’ lead to 4-2 midway through the third period.
The game saw a flurry of power-play goals, with Weegar opening the scoring for Calgary, swiftly countered by Vilardi’s first goal of the night. Ehlers then put the Jets ahead late in the first period, only for Pospisil to tie the game midway through the second.
Adding drama to the contest, Pospisil’s late hit on Jets’ defenseman Morrissey drew scrutiny. After a review initiated by Jets coach Rick Bowness, Pospisil was assessed a major penalty for elbowing and a game misconduct, altering the course of the game in Winnipeg’s favor.
