According to Mercedes Formula 1 team principal Toto Wolff, the Ferrari team fully deserves the successes it has achieved since the beginning of the season.
In the first two races of the year in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, Scuderia Ferrari secured one podium each, with Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc finishing third in both races. This was followed by the Australian Grand Prix, where Sainz and Leclerc brought home a 1-2 for the Scuderia in Melbourne.
Meanwhile, Mercedes’ season is unfolding in a nightmarish manner. In Australia, neither Lewis Hamilton nor George Russell finished, and in the first two races, their best result was Russell’s fifth place in Bahrain. Despite these struggles for his own team, Wolff doesn’t hesitate to express his joy for his colleague Frederic Vasseur and the entire Ferrari team.
“First and foremost, I’m happy for Ferrari, I’m happy for Fred, he deserves it. Last year, we flew together from Dubai to Melbourne, and he had to sit straight for 13 hours because of back pain. Then one of his cars retired in the first lap, and the other finished outside the points after a penalty, things looked terrible. The whole of Italy was looking at him, and now he has a double victory.”
“As much as I don’t like our situation, I have to admit that Vasseur, Ferrari, and Italy deserve these successes. Carlos deserves it not only because of the appendix issue but also after losing his place in the team. I saw what human strength can achieve in times of need,” Wolff said.
