He won the Dallas Open break-less final despite facing 44 aces from the big-serving Isner

Yibing Wu made history at the 2023 Dallas Open when he triumphed over American veteran John Isner to lift his maiden title on the ATP tour.

Despite facing 44 aces from the big-serving Isner and saving four championship points, the 23-year-old Chinese prevailed to win 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 7-6(12).

“I made history here for my country and for my home,” said Wu during the trophy ceremony.

“I’m very proud of myself and especially thanks to all the fans and my team who came here to support. I couldn’t do this without any of you guys.”

In a break-less match, there was only five total break points had, with Wu holding two. Dallas resident Isner help a match point in the second and had three more in the third.

Wu connected seven aces, won 69/87 (79%) on first serves, 28/41 (68%) on second serves.

The 39th-ranked Isner cracked 44 aces, won 73/90 (81%) of first serves, 20/28 (71%) on second serves but up just short. He was just two aces away from the 3-set record held by Ivo Karlovic at 2015 Halle.

“It’s a tough one to lose,” said Isner. “I don’t know how many match points I had, I’m sure it’s a lot. I swear I thought I won the match a few times.

“It’s like he plays every point the same, so definitely no nerves. He gets a ball to hit, he hits it, and on this court it’s hard to hit him a shot he is uncomfortable with.

“He is an unbelievable ballstriker and a very good talent.”
