Xabi Alonso's team defeated Werder Bremen at home to make themselves unreachable at the top

Bayer Leverkusen realized their season-long aspirations by clinching their first Bundesliga title with a resounding 5-0 victory over Werder Bremen on Sunday.

Securing their ninth consecutive win of the season, Leverkusen showcased their dominance with Florian Wirtz leading the charge in the second half, netting a remarkable hat-trick. Victor Boniface and Granit Xhaka also contributed to the triumph, ensuring Leverkusen’s historic victory.

Having been a fixture in Germany’s top league since the 1979-80 season, Leverkusen’s remarkable campaign saw them embark on an unbeaten streak of 30 matches, comprising 26 wins and four draws. Their defensive solidity was evident, conceding just 19 goals throughout the season, thanks in large part to the exceptional performances of 34-year-old goalkeeper and captain Lukas Hradecky.

Under the leadership of manager Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen achieved the remarkable feat of dethroning Bayern Munich, marking the first time since the 2012-13 season that Bayern relinquished their Bundesliga title. This victory comes after Bayern’s unprecedented streak of 11 consecutive Bundesliga titles.

With five games still remaining in the season, Leverkusen’s triumph is a testament to their exceptional form and determination. Their next challenge awaits as they prepare to face Dortmund on April 21st.
