The 31-year-old was taken off during a qualifier match against Venezuela on Saturday and then played 70 minutes with Uruguay.
A statement from Manchester United said that the midfielder is staying in his homeland in order to deal with “small issue”.
The news is another setback to Erik ten Hag and his depleted squad, that has been plagued with injuries.
However, some positives have arrived as Sofyan Amrabat and Sergio Reguilon seem to be fit enough to play. Rasmus Hojlund also completed Thursday practice session after heavy treatment by the San Marino defenders.
Casemiro will also the game after that – a Champions League clash with Copenhagen – as he is suspended, which will give him extra days to recover.
