On Saturday night, the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins braved the elements in the fourth-coldest game in NFL history, as bitter wind chills intensified the cold at kickoff, prompting resilient fans to bundle up in parkas, snow pants, and ski goggles.
The temperature for the wild-card playoff matchup plummeted to minus-4 degrees Fahrenheit (minus-20 Celsius), with wind gusts reaching up to 27 mph, resulting in a bone-chilling wind chill of minus-27 degrees. This shattered the previous record for the coldest game at Arrowhead Stadium, which stood at 1 degree, established in a 1983 game against Denver and equaled in 2016 against Tennessee.
While the coldest game in league history remains the infamous minus-13 degrees during the 1967 NFL championship, known as the Ice Bowl, where the Packers triumphed over the Cowboys at Lambeau Field, the wind chill that day was an astonishing minus-48 degrees.
Despite the harsh conditions, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs adapted better to the frigid weather than their counterparts from South Florida, securing a 26-7 victory over the Dolphins. Remarkably, the freezing temperatures didn’t seem to faze the fans, including pop superstar and avid Chiefs supporter Taylor Swift, who made a grand entrance donning a puffy winter coat designed to mimic the jersey of her boyfriend, Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce.
