Steve, who shared the news with his assistants and basketballers today, will lead Charlotte’s final 7 matches beginning tonight vs. the Blazers.
Hornets’ front office wanted him to remain at the team for the next campaign but Steve declined the offer as he didn’t want to stop the organization to compete for the top young coaches available during the offseason and that gives the opportunity to the team to start an immediate search for his replacement.
The Nets and the Wizards who are both led by interim head coaches — are expected to join Charlotte in coaching searches in the upcoming months.
In 10 years with the Hornets and the Magic as a head coach, Steve is 337-457 with 4 postseason appearances in the East.
