The Washington Commanders have inked a one-year contract with veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota, according to reports from various sources on Tuesday. The deal, valued at $6 million, has the potential to reach $10 million with added incentives. Mariota, who previously played for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023, will continue his journey in the NFC East.
Drafted as the No. 2 overall pick by the Tennessee Titans in 2015, Mariota achieved a 29-32 record as the Titans’ starting quarterback from 2015 to 2019. In 2022, he went 5-8 as the starting quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons. During the 2023 season, Mariota served as Jalen Hurts’ backup, completing 15 of 23 passes for 164 yards with one touchdown and one interception in three games.
The 30-year-old, a Heisman Trophy winner in 2014 at Oregon, boasts a career stat line of completing 62.7 percent of his passes for 15,820 yards, 93 touchdowns, and 55 interceptions in 90 games (74 starts) across the Titans, Las Vegas Raiders (2020-21), Falcons, and Eagles.
With the No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming April draft, the Commanders are widely anticipated to select LSU’s Jayden Daniels, presuming Caleb Williams from Southern California is chosen by the Chicago Bears at No. 1. Washington’s 2022 fifth-round pick, Sam Howell, concluded last season with a 4-13 record as the team’s starter, leading the NFL with 612 pass attempts and 21 interceptions while throwing for 3,946 yards and 21 touchdowns.
