Croatia reached the final four after a 2-0 win after Borna Coric had earlier given his side the lead with a 6-4 7-6(4) win over Roberto Bautista Agut.
Croatia, who finished runner-up to Russia in last year’s Davis Cup final, will play Australia in semi-final action on Friday in Malaga.
“It’s an incredible effort by the team,” the 2014 U.S. Open winner Cilic, who fired 20 aces, said.
“It’s such a great privilege and honor to bring another point for the team Croatia and seal the win against the always strong Spanish team.”

In 2018 Coric and Cilic were both part of the Croatian team that won their second Davis Cup title.
“I like the big stage, I like the big crowd,” Coric said in front of 7,500 noisy fans. “It gives me an extra motivation.
“Today, I felt very, very well on the serve and I think in the end that’s what made the difference.”
