Juan Martin del Potro will not be making a dream return to the US Open after the veteran Argentinian has decided that his body is not fit enough to cope with the strain.
The 34-year-old has been hampered by serious knee injury, but stated in April that he desires to play a farewell match in Flushing Meadows if that is possible.
At the time the tennis association it would accept the popular Argentinian, but unfortunately for him, he wasn’t among the players to receive wild cards on Wednesday.
The player himself revealed he wasn’t feeling comfortable with his health and he wouldn’t push it too far.
Wrist injuries have plagued del Potro’s career and severely hampered his powerful right arm, which gave him his elusive 2009 win over Roger Federer in the final. He did make a return and in 2018 found himself in the final again, this time coming short against Novak Djokovic.
But then right knee injuries sidelined him from June 2019 until one match in Argentina in February 2022.
